Hi.

When I apply power to a Beckhoff BK3120 coupler the only led indication I get is the I/O ERR led.
Nothing on the RUN, BF or DIA leds.
There are no IO modules attached and no Profibus connected.
Is the coupler faulty?

No, that is normal, according to the manual from Beckhoff. If no master is connected, these LEDs are off.

Do you need for Beckhoff a Bus-Termination-Module which might be missing and due to the fact that you have the BK only, now it displays a fault because of open bus?

Yes, this module is mandantory for the K-Bus and that might be the cause for the I/O-Error. The I/O-Error LED has a blink code which specifies the current error. The code is also described in the manual.

Looking at the same coupler on Ebay with power applied with no profibus or termination module other leds are lit.

Take a closer look at the picture and you might find the difference. This difference might be the reason why the LEDs are lit, but as I wrote before, I don't know this coupler. The reason might also be an older firmware, because according to the manual, the upper LEDs should be off.

Its still the same. Any thoughts?
It seems, that you don't know the difference between KL-terminals and EL-terminals. What you have added is a EL end cap and not the KL-9010 End Terminal, which you needed. The BK coupler only supports K-Bus terminals with KL-XXXX and no E-Bus terminals.
By the way, the EL-9011 is only a cap/plate and not a terminal.
